The girls you get to coach, and across college athletics, all the players that come through programs are going to move on at some point and join a workforce and work their way through and hopefully become leaders. And usually it blames someone else. Back in my day, we were accountable for our grades and our parents held us responsible for our performance. So thats one of the functions that has made all the difference in the world, but its not in my opinion the most important one. Anson: please call me any time. And then once they do, once they start to finish high, once they start to play, they understand that everythings in their full control, including winning and losing matches at the highest possible level. If they are below the line and theyre on scholarship, I try to get them to transfer. The top 10 are basically starters, the top 16 basically playing every game.The top five end up signing pro contracts. Anson: Well, they are good. You criticized me here. So even though theyve done nothing but lie to their parents about their performance, now theyre fed all this garbage thats based on the lies youve told your parents thats created a narrative that youve been cheated. And she gave the most wonderful senior exit speech Ive ever heard. Take care. A lot of those championships and gold medals were won with players right out of my program. And they all have these stories, oh, I spent, you know, time with this one person that was, you know, one of my bottom salesmen and then within 6 months he was my top salesman. If you gave them a two it meant they occasionally lived this core value. So whats criticizing them? Anson: I dont want to give speeches anymore. And so we just dont tolerate any kind of whining in any part of any practice, and hopefully theres no whining behind our backs either. So if a kid comes in and they havent done very well that season, and this is a post season review, they all have a protective narrative thats usually, in my environment, organized and I guess constructed in a loop with their parents. Because obviously almost every kid we recruit on scholarship has the dream of playing professionally, so almost every one of our scholarship kids does sign a professional contract. Anson: Well, basically I had this girlI shared the data with her, and shes sitting across from me in cold silence, and Im thinking oh, my gosh, I shouldnt have shared this with her.
